Established in 1903 under the will of Cecil Rhodes, the Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international graduate scholarship program in the world. A class of 83 Scholars is selected each year from:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/bermuda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Bermuda<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/rhodes-canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Canada<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Germany<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/hong-kong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Hong Kong<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/rhodes-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0India<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/the-rhodes-scholarship-for-jamaica-commonwealth-caribbean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Jamaica &amp; the Commonwealth Caribbean<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/kenya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Kenya<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/new-zealand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0New Zealand<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Pakistan<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/southern-africa-including-south-africa-botswana-lesotho-malawi-namibia-and-swaziland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Southern Africa (including South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and Swaziland)<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0United States<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/zambia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Zambia<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/zimbabwe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Zimbabwe.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rhodes&#8217;s vision in founding the Scholarship was to develop outstanding leaders who would be motivated to fight &#8216;the world&#8217;s fight&#8217; and to\u00a0&#8216;esteem the performance of public duties as their highest aim&#8217;, and to promote international understanding and peace. His will outlines four criteria to be used in the election of Scholars:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>literary and scholastic attainments<\/li>\n<li>energy to use one&#8217;s talents to the full<\/li>\n<li>truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship<\/li>\n<li>moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one&#8217;s fellow beings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In short, Rhodes Scholarship selection committees will be seeking young women and men of outstanding\u00a0<strong>intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Rhodes Scholarships support students who demonstrate a strong propensity to emerge as &#8216;leaders for the world\u2019s future&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Rhodes Scholars join just over 20,000 students from more than 140 countries currently studying at the University, and are enriched by the stimulating and rigorous education and the vibrant cultural and community life. Nearly 8,000 Rhodes Scholars have gone on to serve at the forefront of government, the professions, commerce, the arts, education, research and other domains. They are well known advocates for expanded social justice, and have advanced the frontiers of science and medicine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Rhodes Scholarship covers all University and College fees, a personal stipend and one economy class airfare to Oxford at the start of the Scholarship, as well as an economy flight back to the student&#8217;s home country at the conclusion of the Scholarship.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Why Apply?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">83 Rhodes Scholars are selected annually from 14 countries or groupings of countries\u00a0around the world. They are young women and men from diverse backgrounds and interests who show potential to be public-spirited leaders for the world&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rhodes selection criteria<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The selection criteria, as found in the Will of Cecil Rhodes, govern selection across all Rhodes constituencies. \u00a0They are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>literary and scholastic attainments<\/li>\n<li>energy to use one&#8217;s talents to the full<\/li>\n<li>truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship<\/li>\n<li>moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one&#8217;s fellow beings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Selection\u00a0in each Rhodes constituency is by\u00a0committees\u00a0comprised of Rhodes alumni and distinguished non-Scholar members of the community. In general, committees will select applicants\u00a0of outstanding\u00a0intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Rhodes Trust warmly welcomes applications from talented young women and men of diverse backgrounds. Selection of Rhodes Scholars\u00a0is made without regard to gender, gender identity,\u00a0marital status, sexual orientation, race, ethnic origin, colour, religion, social background, caste, or disability.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eligibility criteria for the Rhodes Scholarship<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The following eligibility criteria apply to all applicants for the Rhodes Scholarships:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Citizenship &amp; residency:<\/strong>\u00a0Each applicant must fulfil the citizenship and residency requirements\u00a0of the Rhodes constituency\u00a0for which\u00a0they are\u00a0applying.\u00a0 Please check the detailed information carefully via the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country links<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Age:<\/strong>\u00a0Age limits vary between constituencies and range from a minimum age limit of 18 to a maximum of\u00a028 by 1 October of the year following selection.\u00a0In most constituencies, the age limit is 24 or 25. Please check carefully the specific age requirements for your constituency before applying.\u00a0 Successful candidates will arrive in Oxford the October following the selection process.\u00a0 The Scholarship may not normally be deferred.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Education:<\/strong>\u00a0All applicants must have achieved academic standing sufficiently advanced to assure completion of a bachelor&#8217;s degree by the October following election.\u00a0Academic standing must be sufficiently high to ensure admission to\u00a0the University of Oxford, which has very competitive entry requirements, and to give confidence that Rhodes Scholars will perform to a high academic standard in Oxford.\u00a0Individual constituencies may specify a 1st or equivalent.\u00a0 Some constituencies require an undergraduate degree to have been taken within the constituency of application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Application process<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1. Application to the Scholarship:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applications for Rhodes Scholarships open during the spring and summer of the preceding year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All candidates for the Scholarship should read the information about the Scholarships applicable\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/rhodesscholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">globally<\/a>, and then proceed to their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country-specific page<\/a>. Online application is not available for applicants to New Zealand and Pakistan.\u00a0 Please refer to the relevant country page:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/new-zealand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Zealand<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/about\/rhodes-countries\/pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pakistan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In broad terms, all constituencies will require the following materials in differing forms:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Evidence of academic record \/ transcript (complete or in progress) of undergraduate degree and any postgraduate study<\/li>\n<li>Curriculum vitae\/resum\u00e9 or list of principal activities<\/li>\n<li>Personal statement or essay (including, crucially,\u00a0<em>a clear statement of what the applicant wishes to study at Oxford and why<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of age \/ birth certificate \/ passport<\/li>\n<li>English Language proficiency (where English is not the first language)<\/li>\n<li>Photograph<\/li>\n<li>List of referees (usually\u00a0several are required) who can attest in confidential references to the character and intellect of the applicant, including academic, personal, extra-curricular and leadership achievements (and who should never include people to whom you are related)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2. Choice of course in the University of Oxford:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Subject to limited restrictions, Rhodes Scholars may read for any full-time postgraduate degree (including the BA with senior status over two years) at the University of Oxford.\u00a0 The basic tenure of the Scholarship is two years, subject always, and at all times, to satisfactory academic performance and personal conduct.
